Meet the Team
David Heap is the owner of 'Royle Equestrian' and has a proactive approach to managing the centre. The farm has been in the family since 1922 and was purchased by David in 1975. Initially he earned a living as a dairy farmer until 1999 when he decided to diversify into horses. David's grandfather was a horse dealer who lived at the same farm and imported Irish horses into Lancashire. He supplied the horses to milkmen, coalmen and the landos (carriages) on Blackpool Promenade.
Dawn Richards has a gift for working with horses. Her first experience of riding was upon a donkey in Wales. She started riding ponies at the age of seven. Her first pony was an unbroken Welsh called 'Silver' who taught her how to ride bareback. This led to riding and competing on several 'character buiding' ponies. Upon leaving school, Dawn became a racehorse training jockey for Henry Candy and later, Jenny Pitman.
Dawn's career progressed into showjumping and riding 'novice' horses of her own and for other people.
The show jumping photo shows Dawn riding her own horse, Orfus De L'Eau, whom she bought as an unbroken 3 year old and trained up to 1.30m level. Here they are jumping at Hickstead International Area.
She now finds great pleasure in schooling and teaching young horses - both her own and those belonging to customers. For more information please click on Equestrian Services
The Centre is regularly visited by a number of farriers, some of whom are qualified in remedial farriery. If you prefer to maintain your relationship with your current farrier this can be accommodated.
The Equestrian Centre is also supported by Stanley House Veterinary Group who provide a service on the first Thursday afternoon of every month, allowing Liveries to avoid call out charges.
Aireworth Vets can also provide a service to the yard for customers registered to their practice. They reserve Thursdays for visiting the Burnley area.
So, whether you have been looking after and riding horses for years, or feel like a beginner, Royal Equestrian Centre can support you and your horse/pony in a professional and friendly way.
